Reach Out and Read
Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud in pediatric exam rooms across the nation.
TransPerfect believes that because the ability to read is a fundamental skill, nothing is more important than getting books into the hands of children whose families can’t afford them. In support of that, TransPerfect took a leadership role in celebrating the 10th anniversary of Reach Out and Read of Greater New York (ROR-GNY).
Reach Out and Read of Greater New York (ROR GNY):
- Reaches over 244,000 children each year,
- Distributes nearly 400,000 books annually, and
- Serves children in all five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, Westchester and six northern counties.
ROR-GNY follows an innovative program that links early literacy to routine pediatric visits in which doctors talk to parents about the importance of reading aloud. Volunteers read to kids in waiting rooms, modeling reading techniques for parents, and every child gets a brand new book to take home.
TransPerfect supported ROR-GNY by co-chairing the organization’s 2009 Benefit Dinner and Auction at Tribeca Rooftop, purchasing a table, and helping to promote the event among our clients in the New York region. TransPerfect COO Roy Trujillo also presented a speech at the dinner. Justin Tuck of the New York Giants and his wife, Lauran, as well as children’s book writing team Emma Walton Hamilton and Julie Andrews Edwards, were recognized for contributions to children’s literacy.
