Fluke Networks
Background
Fluke Networks provides innovative solutions for the testing, monitoring, and analysis of enterprise and telecommunications networks, as well as the installation and certification of their underlying fiber and copper cable infrastructures. Its comprehensive line of Network SuperVision SolutionsTM provides network installers, owners, and maintainers with superior vision that combines speed, accuracy, and ease of use to optimize network performance.
Challenge
Headquartered in Everett, Washington, Fluke Networks has over 500 employees worldwide and distributes its products in more than 50 countries. With an outstanding reputation for excellence and innovation, Fluke sought to maintain superior relationships with its Fortune 500 clients all over the world, and the release of its OptiFiber Certifying OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) called for an immediate, seven-language localization, both to keep its clients apprised of new developments and to increase usability of this product throughout the world.
- Under strict deadlines, seven languages had to be simultaneously localized within a dynamic authoring process in an effort to include this new state-of-the-art product.
- Highly technically proficient translators were essential to the success of this project, as the need to ensure content and consistency throughout all languages was of great importance.
- The specifics of the project insisted upon the need for a technology partner who could develop special characters for the OptiFibers' display.
Solution
As the OptiFiber OTDR had limited hard drive space, each language had to be localized with an eye to precision. Combining linguistic skill with technical expertise, Translations.com paired with Fluke to create a globally efficient solution that would ease their multilingual concerns and address display font issues.
- Translations.com worked closely with Fluke's engineers to develop a solution that involved the creation and sub-setting of fonts for Chinese and Japanese.
- Translators were selected to adapt existing content, as well as to maintain both the technical integrity and the market branding of the project.
- After localization, the software was extensively tested to ensure that all of the text displayed and wrapped properly on the device.
- Localized content was further incorporated to build Banca Personal, an online banking website tailored specifically toward Spanish speakers in the US domestic market.
- Engineers and linguists worked hand in hand to create documentation strategies, thus streamlining the localization process while expanding the availability of this new device.
Though Translations.com has worked with Fluke since 1989 on hundreds of localization projects, the OptiFiber OTDR seven-language localization was one of the most significant. French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese are now supported language offerings for the Fluke Networks array of products. Translations.com worked tirelessly to ensure that deadlines were met with a commitment to financial goals that were established for this project. We are proud of our role in adapting this new technology to a global market, and are pleased to be a continued provider to Fluke Networks.
